Norway's ruling and opposition political parties reached an agreement on making Norway a leader in cutting carbon-dioxide emissions Thursday, according to reports reaching here from Oslo.

A key aspect of the agreement is that Norway will aim to be "carbon-neutral" by 2030 instead of the government's original goal of 2050, the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten reported.

To reaching the goal, environment tax for diesel and petrol will be increased further and more budget money will be devoted to research into climate-related issues and renewable energy sources, the paper said.

The various parties in the Norwegian parliament had been earlier unable to agree on the concrete goals in terms of emissions, the paper added.

All the major political parties except for the populist Progress Party were included in the negotiations concluded on Thursday morning.
