The United States hopes that now talks with Poland on installing parts of an anti-missile shields will be intensified, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Daniel Fried said in Warsaw on Thursday.
The United States is ready to discuss Polish proposals concerning ways of strengthening Poland's security in connection with the possible deployment of the anti-missile shield, Fried was quoted as saying by Polish news agency PAP.
The Donald Tusk cabinet returned to the demand of linking U.S. anti-missile shield proposal with a U.S. offer to deploy new short and medium range air defense systems in Poland and an agreement on military cooperation.
Fried said Thursday that the United States "has treated these suggestions as serious proposals from a serious ally." The Washington was prepared for serious talks on these issues, he added.
He declined to go into details, saying the issues should be discussed by military experts, not by politicians or journalists.
The United States should and were ready to cooperate with Poland on a strengthening of defense cooperation. "The U.S. wants to analyze and counteract all possible threats that could emerge as a consequence of deploying anti-missile shield (elements) in Poland, the U.S. diplomat said.
Fried stressed the United States understood that the new Polish government needed some time to get acquainted with the state of negotiations. But the visit paid by Defense Minister Bogdan Klich to the United States is "a clear signal" that Poland is ready to start talks and their pace will accelerate, Fried told a press conference.
Fried said he met on Wednesday with President Lech Kaczynski and added the meeting was held in a good atmosphere.
During his Polish visit ending Thursday Fried also talked with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski and LiD politicians.
