Foreign ministers from Mediterranean EU member states gathered in Cyprus on Thursday to discuss regional and international issues ranging from Kosovo to Middle East peace process.
At an evening reception in the southwestern city of Paphos, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos warmly welcomed foreign ministers and senior officials from Slovenia, Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Bulgaria, Romania and France.
He took the opportunity to thank Slovenians, Greeks and Irish for sharing their experiences in euro adoption, which helped Cyprus avoid difficulties and carry out a very smooth transition since Jan. 1.
Papadopoulos wished them productive deliberations during the two-day meeting.
The foreign ministers will discuss issues such as Kosovo, Middle East peace process, illegal immigration, natural disaster response mechanisms and the creation of a Mediterranean Union.
No official decisions are expected to be made during the meeting, but Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis said she and her counterparts would exchange views and achieve closer cooperation on dealing with those problems.
The informal meeting of Mediterranean EU states' foreign ministers is convened twice a year, at the beginning of each EU presidency.
