The Polish government hopes to have candid talks with Russia on the planned U.S. anti-missile defense system in Eastern Europe, Poland's Defense Minister Bogdan Klich said Saturday.
Responding to the remarks by a high-ranking Russian military official who said earlier in the day that Russia may use nuclear weapons if necessary, Klich said Poland does not fear the threat but is willing to talk with Russia.
However, confronted with the threat from Russia, Poland needs more help from the United States to upgrade its defense system, Klinch was quoted by Poland's PAP news agency as saying.
Speaking at a meeting of the Russian Academy of Military Science, Yuri Buluyevsky, chief of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces, said the country will use military means including nuclear weapons if necessary to protect itself and its allies.
The United States is planning to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic as part of its European missile shield. Russia has objected the plan, saying it will threat Russian national security. Source:Xinhua
