Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said on Wednesday her government plans to review the tariff paid by Russia for transit of its natural gas across Ukraine to European markets.
"I think the time has come for a discussion between Ukraine and Russia about the transit tariff," Tymoshenko said, implying that the tariff should be raised as Russia had raised its gas export prices for Ukraine.
Tymoshenko said she had ordered a market study of transit tariffs in other countries with gas transportation networks for comparison with Ukraine's fees.
"With these figures we would start talks with Russia," she added.
Both Tymoshenko and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko are expected to visit Moscow in February. Last week, Yushchko had ruled out increasing transit tariff for Russia, arguing this would lead to higher Russian gas prices for Ukraine.
Ukraine currently charges Russia 1.7 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic meters of gas per 100 kilometers of transit.
