Spanish police on Wednesday arrested eight people in a new wave of efforts to crack down on street violence in the northern part of the country, the Interior Ministry said.
The detainees, who are between 18 and 25 years old, were arrested in Markina, Etxebarri and Ondarroa, all in the northern region of Vizcaya.
Ensuing searches of their homes yielded documents showing that the detainees belong to organizations that back the illegal separatist group ETA. Some explosives and mobile phones were also captured during the searches.
The operation, the fifth in recent months, is part of a broader strategy to tackle street violence in the northern regions of Navarra and the Basque.
The armed group ETA, whose name stands for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or Basque Homeland and Freedom in Basque language, seeks independence for the Basque region, which straddles northeastern Spain and southwestern France.
According to official estimates, some 850 people have died since ETA took up arms against the Spanish government in 1968. Source:Xinhua
