French police on Friday searched the headquarters of Societe Generale following an alleged 7-billion-dollar loss in one of the biggest frauds in financial history, a bank spokeswoman said on Saturday.
According to a source familiar with the matter, police searched for the computer records of the junior trader, Jerome Kerviel, who has been blamed for the fraud.
Police also searched Kerviel's apartment on the western outskirts of Paris on Friday night.
The trader had worked at Societe Generale in Paris since 2000.
The prosecutor's office has opened a preliminary criminal investigation into the case after scores of shareholders lodged a suit against the bank for fraud and misconduct.
Societe Generale, the country's second-largest bank, will have to raise 5.5 billion euros (7.7 billion U.S. dollars) in emergency capital to shore up its ravaged balance sheet. Source: Xinhua
