Bulgaria is going to issue green cards to foreign employees in April, allowing them to live and work legally in the country, local media reported on Saturday, citing Labor Minister Emilia Maslarova's announcement.
The labor minister and Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev met Friday with representatives of employers' organizations to discuss ways of attracting foreign employees, and the implementation of projects financed by the European Union (EU).
"The Bulgarian green card system will be in line with the migration policy of the European Union," Maslarova explained.
Despite the fact that there are about 260,000 people unemployed in Bulgaria, the business still expects a work force shortage. That's why the country needs to attract more qualified foreign employees, head of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria, Ivo Prokopiev, said.
According to the annual study of the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA) on the business climate of the country released in December, the shortage of qualified work force is dramatically growing in Bulgaria, and half of the companies on the market have difficulties in employing qualified personnel.
