About 1,300 children in Bulgaria's three southern cities may have been infected with Listeriosis after drinking contaminated milk in their kindergartens, the Sofia News Agency reported Tuesday.
Local authorities said the children in the municipalities of Dupnitza, Rila and Kocherinovo will be examined for Listeriosis, a serious bacteria infection typically affecting infants, unborn babies, the elderly and others with weak immune systems.
The milk contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria was produced by Euromeat and Milk EOOD, which were punished in January for failing to meet hygienic requirements, the news agency quoted officials as saying.
According to experts, while Listeriosis is less common than some food borne diseases such as salmonella, 20 percent of those who get sick from the disease die. Source: Xinhua
