Voters in Washington D.C. and neighboring states of Virginia and Maryland went to the polls Tuesday morning to cast ballots for presidential candidates.
Polls opened in Virginia at 6 a.m. local time (1100 GMT) and Maryland and Washington D.C. an hour later.
A high turnout is expected on the Democratic side.
The three races on Tuesday, collectively known as the "Potomac Primaries" as the two states and Washington DC are located in the Potomac river region, could be pivotal for the Democrats.
Sen. Barack Obama is well positioned to Sen. Hillary Clinton in all three contests after winning all five Democratic races over the weekend.
Clinton is looking ahead to primaries in Ohio and Texas in March in hope of reversing her consecutive losses.
On the Republican side, front-runner Sen. John McCain is seeking to bolster his lead after two weekend defeats.
Polls suggested McCain has the edge over former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who won in Kansas and Louisiana on Saturday.
