A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale rocked southern Greece on Thursday. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to Greek News Agency ANA-MPA, the quake was recorded at 12:09 am (10:09 GMT) with its epicenter located beneath the seabed 60 km southwest of the port city Kalamata, on Greece's extreme southwest tip.
Local geologist Efthymios Lekkas told Greek TV that the quake could have been at a depth of 30 km off the coast of the extreme southwest harbor town of Methoni.
The tremor was felt throughout the Peloponnese province of southern Greece, causing residents in numerous townships and villages to evacuate buildings.
In the same region in the extreme southwestern Peloponnese, a strong after-shock occurred at roughly 2:25 p.m. (12:25 GMT), local media reported.
