Russia wants to assert its right to part of the Arctic shelf with its Arctic research, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

"Our research is aimed at proving that Russia has the right to a definite chunk of this shelf," Putin told his annual news conference in the Kremlin.

All this is being done within the framework of the existing international norms and the United Nations, Putin said, adding he was surprised by the reaction of some nations to Russia's research and to the planting of a Russian flag on the Arctic seabed.

Putin called for a professional dialogue within the United Nations on the Arctic shelf.

"We protect our interests, we want to assert our rights, and we are gathering proof exactly for an open and committed dialogue on the issue," he said.
