Vladimir Zhirinovsky, head of the Russian Liberal-Democratic Party, was born on April 25, 1946, in the city of Alma-Ata.

In 1969, he graduated from Moscow State University (Oriental Languages). His army service (1970-1973) took place in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Between 1973 and 1991, Zhirinovsky held a sequence of jobs. First, he worked for the Soviet Committee for Defense of Peace as a reviewer. Then, while working for Injurcollegia, Zhirinovsky graduated from Moscow State University night school to become a lawyer. Later, he held the position of a prorector (vice-president) at the Higher School of the Trade Union Movement. After that, he became Chief of the Legal Service at "Mir" Publishers.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky started his political career in 1988, and quickly went on to become a founder of the Liberal Democratic Party(LDP). The LDP was eventually transformed into the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR).

In 1991 he and his party finished a third behind Boris Yeltsin in the Russian Republic's presidential election.

In 1993 his party won the largest share (about 23 percent) of the popular vote in the elections, and Zhirinovsky was elected to the new Russian State Duma.

In 1995 his party was the runner-up to the Communists in the elections for the Duma.

In 1996 Zhirinovsky again ran for presidency but received only a small percentage of the vote. In the late 1990s his popularity waned: His party won 6 percent of the vote in the 1999 parliamentary elections, and he placed fifth in the 2000 presidential election.
