Russia has called for an immediate session of the United Nations Security Council to look into the issue of Kosovo's independence, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
"We expect the UN Mission in Kosovo and NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) will take immediate action to fulfill their mandates as authorized by the UN Security Council, including voiding the decisions of the Pristina local government and adopting severe administrative measures against them," the ministry said in a statement.
The unilateral declaration of the Kosovo independence "is in violation of the Serbian sovereignty, the UN Charter, the 1244 UN Security Council resolution, principles of the Helsinki Accords, the Kosovan constitutional framework and high level agreements within the framework of the Kosovo Contact Group," said the statement.
Unilateral recognition of Kosovo's independence is "illegal from the point of view of international laws," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"Russia fully backs the reaction of the Serbian authorities to the situation in Kosovo, as well as their just demands to restore the territorial integrity of the country," the Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry said Kosovo's proclamation of independence "is fraught (with the danger of) escalating tensions and ethnic violence in the province, and new conflicts in the Balkans."
It urged the international community to react to this challenge.
"Those who are thinking of supporting separatism should understand the dangerous consequences for the principles of the world order," the ministry said.
"There exists a serious threat that clashes will take place. International organizations should do every necessary thing to prevent them," Russia's Interfax news agency cited presidential aide Aslanbek Aslakhanov as saying.
Kosovo's parliament officially declared independence from Serbia on Sunday, with supports from the United States and the European Union.
Russia, which strongly opposes the Serbian province's independence, has said that it would set a dangerous precedent for secessionist groups worldwide. Source: Xinhua
