Greek authorities sent rescue helicopters to help a Russian naval vessel after it issued a distress signal on Monday in the eastern Aegean Sea.
According to the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry, two Super-Pumaall-weather helicopters and a Greek navy frigate were immediately dispatched to the area.
It is reported that the vessel, with an unknown number of persons aboard, sent out an SOS as it sailed 15 nautical miles south of Ikaria in extreme weather conditions. The Russian vessel was sailing adrift due to engine failure.
A raging snowstorm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend also continued into the early hours of Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures.
Public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, and public services and schools remained closed in the more severely-stricken prefectures. Source: Xinhua
