Russia's former atomic energy minister Anatoly Adamov was sentenced to five and a half years in prison on Wednesday, according to local media reports.
Moscow's Zamoskvoretsky court Wednesday pronounced Adamov guilty of stealing 31 million U.S. dollars, one day after convicting him of fraud and abuse of office, Itar-Tass news agency reported.
Adamov told the court that he would challenge the guilty verdict, "I will keep on fighting till the end, until you establish the truth and see that none of these people are guilty."
The prosecutor demanded nine years in a general penitentiary for Adamov and claimed his culpability had been proven in the course of the court investigation.
The former minister demanded an acquittal, claiming that his deeds had complied with his powers and laws.
Adamov was arrested in Switzerland in 2005 at the request of the United States, that accused him of the embezzlement of 9 million U.S. dollars assigned for nuclear security in Russia. He was eventually extradited to Moscow.
