Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday congratulated Serzh Sargsyan on his victory in Armenia's presidential election.
"Russia highly appreciates relations of trust, constructive cooperation and mutual support that have developed between our countries," Itar-Tass news agency quoted Putin as saying in a message.
"I am satisfied to note your big personal contribution to the development of Russian-Armenian relations. I am convinced that your work in the high office of the head of the Armenian state will further them," said Putin.
Sargsyan, former prime minister of the south Caucasus state, won some 53 percent of votes in Tuesday's polling, clearing the 50-percent threshold required for the top job.
He is expected to replace outgoing President Robert Kocharian, who is currently serving his second and final five-year term.
