Milo Djukanovic, the driver for Montenegro's independence, got the mandate from the President on Wednesday to form a new government after the premier resigned, the official Mina news agency reported.

President Filip Vujanovic said that Djukanovic had significantly contributed to the affirmation of Montenegro and its international reputation while he performed the duties of Prime Minister or President in the past.

"I'm sure that his government will be fully devoted to the European and Euro-Atlantic integration which is of lasting need and interest of Montenegro," Vujanovic said.

Vujanovic has called for an extraordinary session of the Montenegrin Parliament to elect a government on Feb. 28.

Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic resigned for health reasons last month.

Djukanovic was Montenegrin Prime Minister for four times and President once from 1991 to 2006. He was the main driver for the country's independence from Serbia in June, 2006. He quit from active politics in late 2006 but remained the leader of the main governing party, the Democratic Party of Socialists.
