The Portuguese government Thursday signed a decree to send members of the National Republic Guard to the European Gendarmerie Force (EGF).
By law, the government decree requires the Portuguese parliament's final approval.
The EGF was initiated by five European Union (EU) member states-- France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain -- on Sept. 17, 2004, with the aim of improving the EU's crisis management capability in sensitive areas.
The EGF consists of 800 soldiers but the number can be increased to 2,100 if necessary. Source: Xinhua
