Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica expressed regret on Friday at the violence during a mass rally against the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo.

"We had witnessed a huge misfortune and that in the violence that broke out one person got killed," Kostunica said, while hailing Thursday's magnificent rally.

"Violence and destruction bring direct harm to our fight for the preservation of state and national interests. All those who opt for the false state of Kosovo can only be too glad to see violence in Belgrade," the prime minister told the official Tanjug news agency.

He urged again "all the citizens to refrain from violence, so that no more incidents, not even the slightest ones, occurred in our country."

Rioters attacked on Thursday the embassies of the United States and several other countries during a mass rally in Serbian capital Belgrade against Kosovo independence. The incident left one dead and up to 150 injured, including 32 policemen.

Protests, some turned into riots, erupted all over Serbia and the North of Kosovo following Sunday's unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo.
