The European Union hailed on Friday the conduct of the general election in Pakistan, deeming it "a basis for a new democratic development" in the country.
"The European Union welcomes the elections held in Pakistan on Feb. 18. It congratulates the Pakistani people for their commitment to democratic development and their rejection of extremist forces. The elections provide a basis for a new democratic development in Pakistan," a statement from the current holder of the EU Presidency Slovenia said.
The statement expressed hope for a swift formation of a stable and functional government in Pakistan so that "it can start addressing core issues for Pakistan's future such as strengthening the democratic system, reestablishment of an independent judiciary, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and issues related to regional peace and stability."
However, the EU deeply regretted at the fact that not all political detainees were released and thus prevented them from taking part in the voting process, the statement said, calling again for their immediate release and the need for freedom of the media.
The EU reiterated its promise to help Pakistani people with social developments, citing the successful deployment of a comprehensive EU Election Observation Mission during the elections as an ample evidence of the EU's continuing engagement.
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won majority seats in the National Assembly in the election, and will form coalition governments in central and provincial levels, leaders of the two parties announced on Thursday.
