The recognition of Kosovo's independence will have a negative impact on other regional conflicts, including the Middle East issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

"Opinions are being expressed that following the unilateral proclamation of the independence of Kosovo, absolutely the same should be done with the Palestinian state," Lavrov said in an interview with the Vesti 24 TV channel.

"Then the United Nations will get two states having no understandings, no agreements on how to guarantee security in the extremely unstable and potentially explosive part of the world," said the top diplomat.

Kosovo, a breakaway province of Serbia dominated by ethnic Albanians, unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on Feb. 17. Belgrade said the proclamation is null and void and Russia also slammed the declaration.

"This would not only trigger off the growth of separatism but undermine the foundations of the security architecture in the world, primarily the foundations of the European security architecture that are going through hard times as it is," Itar-Tass quoted Lavrov as saying.

Russian First Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a presidential hopeful endorsed by President Vladimir Putin, was on a visit to Belgrade Monday ahead of the March 2 voting.

Moscow will support Moslems, Croats and Serbs, said Medvedev during the signing ceremony of an agreement on building a gas pipeline to sell Russia's gas to the European market.
