Romania was urged Wednesday by the European Commission (EC) to recover 27 million euros (39.96 million U.S. dollars) identified as illegal state aid in the privatization of carmaker Automobile Craiova.
The European Commission had probed the privatization of Automobile Craiova for two possible forms of state aid: regional aid offered through the state's commitment to budget expenditures for the development of auto building schools, training apprentices, foremen and engineers, and national state aid.
Ford Europe, the European division of the world's third largest car maker, has decided to buy from the Romanian state 72.4 percent of its Automobile Craiova stake for 57 million euros (84.4 million U.S. dollars).
The EC found that Romania devised a set of requirements in exchange for state aid for the privatization of the company.
The Americans have pledged to double the number of Craiova employees from the current 3,900 to 7,000-9,000 and invest one billion euros (1.48 billion U.S. dollars) in Romania until 2011. Source: Xinhua
