The European Union Commissioner for Health Markos Kyprianou, a Greek Cypriot, submitted his resignation on Thursday in order to head the Foreign Ministry at home.
Kyprianou has been appointed as Cyprus' new Foreign Minister by President Demetris Christofias who has just took office.
The semi-official Cyprus News Agency reported from Brussels that Kyprianou submitted his resignation to the Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
The EU Commission also announced that that the resignation will be effective as soon as a successor has been nominated by the Republic of Cyprus and appointed by the Council.
Barroso is reportedly consulting with Cyprus President over the nomination of Kyprianou's successor.
Until his resignation becomes effective, Kyprianou will continue to exercise his mandate as member of the European Commission, says an EU news release.
Kyprianou, 48, a lawyer by profession, served as Cyprus' finance minister from March 2003 to April 2004. He became a member of the European Commission since May 2004.
