A gas explosion in the eastern French city of Lyon killed a fireman and injured 40 people on Thursday, police said.
The blast occurred around midday on a pavement in the city center where maintenance work on a gas pipe was being carried out, setting fire to an adjacent building.
A fireman, 35, was killed in the blast, according to Lyon Mayor Gerard Colomb.
A total of 40 people were injured in the accident, including firemen, passersby and gas workers.
French Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie went to the scene, saying "all the security procedures were not sufficiently taken into account."
French President Nicolas Sarkozy who is visiting South Africa wrote to the family of the dead firemen to express his condolence, according to the presidential office. Source: Xinhua
