At least three people were killed and nine others injured in a fire on a night train running between the Bulgarian capital Sofia and the northern town of Kardam, local media reported Friday.

The fire erupted on two sleeping-carriages of the nine-car train at around 11:40 p.m. local time (2140 GMT) on Thursday near the central town of Cherven Briag, according to the national broadcaster BTV.

There were 62 people on board the two coaches which burnt down completely, but most of the people were evacuated before the fire spread.

Bulgaria's Transport Minister Peter Mutafchiev visited the place of the tragedy and the injured people, who are currently in a hospital in Cherven Briag.

According to the doctors, the conditions of the injured are stable and their lives are out of danger.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Investigation has been launched.
