Spain approved on Friday the extradition of former military official Ricardo Miguel Cavallo, who is accused of crimes against humanity, to Argentina.
In a press conference, Spanish first Deputy Prime Minister Fernandez de la Vega said that Mexico has authorized Spain to extradite Cavallo.
Spanish officials needed Mexico's permission since it had handed over Cavallo to Spain.
Mexican police arrested Cavallo in August of 2000 after many Argentines residing in Mexico recognized him as the former military official who led torture and repression actions against people opposing Argentina's military government in the 1976-1983 period.
At the time of his arrest in Mexico, Cavallo was heading Mexico's Vehicle Registry (Renave) and was recognized and arrestedin the beach resort city of Cancun, in the southeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo.
Cavallo, dubbed "serpico" or "marcelo", has been held in a Spanish prison since 2003, after he was extradited from Mexico and charged by the authorities in Spain with genocide and terrorism.
According to Spain's highest court judge Baltasar Garzon, who ordered his imprisonment, Cavallo is responsible for executions, murder, illegal arrests, kidnapping and robbery of assets belonging to people opposing Argentina's military government, including Spanish citizens.
