French Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said Monday that four police officers were injured in an ambush in the southern Paris suburb of Grigny.

According to an interior ministry statement, the police officers were called to a high-rise estate Sunday after a local bakery was vandalized by two people.

When they arrived, they were confronted by "around 30 people whose faces were masked and several of whom were armed," the statement said.

Three officers were treated at the scene after being hit in the face by lead shot. A fourth was hospitalized with leg injuries caused by lead shot.

Efforts were under way to identify and apprehend those involved in the ambush, according to Alliot-Maire.
