British Prime Minister Gordon Brown congratulated Russian President-elect Dmitry Medvedev Monday, saying that Britain was looking for "opportunities" to improve relations with Russia.
"We have always said that we will look for opportunities to improve our relationship with Russia, and hope to see greater Russian cooperation on a number of issues," Brown's spokesman said, adding that Brown had written to Medvedev.
"But we should judge the new government on its actions and the results of those actions," he said.
Medvedev, Russia's first deputy prime minister of Russian President Vladimir Putin's cabinet, won a landslide victory in Sunday's presidential election.
Relations between London and Moscow have been tense over the dispute on the murder of exiled former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko in London, and Russia's decision to close down offices of the British Council in the cities of St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.
