The London Stock Market, dragged down by financial stocks, dropped at noon on Tuesday.
The FTSE 100 index was down 55.8 points, or 0.96 percent, to 5,762.8 at midday.
Insurance firm Admiral was a major loser, plunging by more than10 percent after it said its comparison site Confused.com would face tough competition in 2008.
Banking shares fell, with Alliance & Leicester down 3.7 percent, HBOS falling 2.8 percent and HSBC down 2.7 percent.
