A passenger train heading from Athens to Alexandropolis derailed early Saturday morning, injuring28 people, Greek state television channel NET reported.

Head of the National Health Operation Center Panos Efstathiou said three people, including one woman passenger who suffered multiple injuries, remained under medical care while 25 others had already been discharged from hospital.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Initial findings indicated that human error in the switching mechanism might have led the passenger train onto a commercial train track.

In the meantime, the TV report said the damaged track had been partially repaired.
