A total of 758 people were evacuated from an ice floe that drifted away from the coast of Russia's Far East, news agencies reported Sunday.
Helicopters and motorboats were used in the rescue operation in the Sea of Okhotsk near the Sakhalin coast to save the endangered anglers who drifted away from the shore after the ice floe broke earlier Sunday, Itar-Tass reported, citing local ministry of emergencies.
Local authorities issued warnings of possible breakaways of ice several days before the incident.
Such incidents were frequent as the ice in the region is shaky, typically when the winter is over and spring comes.
A total of 350 people were rescued from floating ice floe from late March to April last year in similar operations in far east Russia. Source:Xinhua
