U.S. President George W. Bush's announcement of aid in modernizing the Polish army is a hands-down success for the Donald Tusk government, Robert Tyszkiewicz from the ruling Civic Platform (PO) said on Monday.
Earlier on Monday Bush told Tusk at the White House that he would present an aid package for the Polish armed forces before his term expires.
Poland has demanded U.S. military aid in return for the installation in Poland of fragments of a U.S. anti-missile shield.
Tyszkiewicz said he was "pleasantly surprised" by Bush's words. "I expected something more diplomatic and less to the point," Polish news agency PAP quoted him as saying.
Former presidential aide Elzbieta Jakubiak said Bush's promise was also the effect of efforts made by the previous government.
"I'm glad president Bush said three words. They had to fall sometime and I'm glad it's now," Jakubiak said.
Marek Borowski from left-wing oppositionist Left and Democrats suggested Tusk should wait with further shield talks until after the U.S. presidential elections.
Ex-Prime Minister and opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said he could not say whether the Bush-Tusk talks were a step forward or not.
