Thousands of Spaniards protested in front of city and town halls on Monday slamming Basque separatist group ETA for the killing of a former Socialist councilor in northern Spain.
Isaias Carrasco, a member of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), died on Friday after he was shot in the back of the head in the Basque town of Mondragon. The PSOE government, which was reelected on Sunday, blames ETA for the murder.
Protesters observed a five-minute silence during their rallies, which were organized by the Spanish Municipalities and Provinces Federation.
In Mondragon, there were two demonstrations: one organized by Carrasco's co-workers and another organized by a regional union the ELA.
Analysts believe the killing was a revenge attack for the government's decision to exclude ETA-linked parties from Sunday's general elections.
The murder brought widespread condemnation from political parties and social organizations on Friday.
ETA, which is classified as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union, has waged a four-decade campaign of violence to seek independence for the Basque region straddling northeastern Spain and southwestern France.
According to official figures, the group has killed at least 800 people in bombings and shootings since the late 1960s.
