Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates Monday hailed Sunday's general election victory of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).
"The Portuguese government would have been pleased to work with whatever government chosen by the Spanish people, but everyone knows my personal preference," said Socrates, a member of Portugal's Socialist Party, describing re-elected Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero as "one of his best friends."
Zapatero will hold office for another four-year term, ending 2012. The PSOE won 43.7 percent of the ballots compared to 40.1 percent won by its rival, the conservative People's Party.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado also welcomed the PSOE victory and the favorable relationship between the two governments.
"We are pleased to see a victory for a government with whom we have worked closely for two years," he told Portuguese media as he arrived in the Belgian capital Brussels for a European Union foreign ministers' meeting.
"The elections were a clear vote of confidence by Spain's people in the democratic process," he said.
