Presidents of Poland and Egypt Lech Kaczynski and Hosni Mubarak discussed here Tuesday the situation in the Middle East and ways of boosting economic cooperation.

"This was one of the most interesting meetings I had over the past two years," said Lech Kaczynski at a joint press conference held after talks with the Egyptian president.

The presidents discussed the situation in the Middle East, the Palestinian National Authority, Lebanon, the Persian Gulf and Africa including Darfur and Somalia, according to Polish news agency PAP.

Mubarak, for his part, said that Egyptian-Polish relations should be fostered especially in the field of trade exchange, investments and tourism.

The guest believes Cairo and Warsaw need bilateral and EU-Egypt achievements and projects.

"We agreed for the need to step up our regional and international efforts aimed at defusing the situation in that region, also in the context of cooperation with the EU," Mubarak said.

The Egyptian leader also said that "Poland plays a very active role in Middle Eastern affairs, pursues a very active foreign policy also as an EU member."

This is the first ever visit to Poland by an Egyptian president. It will last three days and include a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Wednesday.
