A major security alert is under way at London Heathrow Airport on Thursday afternoon after a man with a rucksack scaled the perimeter fence and ran into the path of an aircraft.

The incident happened just after 14:05 GMT on Heathrow's north runway.

Up to 20 emergency services vehicles were sent to the scene, and armed police surrounded the man.

Sniffer dogs were sent in to check his rucksack, and officers were called in as a precaution.

The man were taken into custody. No-one has been hurt in the incident.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "A man was arrested had is currently in custody. A bag has been recovered."

A British Airways spokesman said: "Flights will obviously be disrupted due to the closure of the runway."
