Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Thursday that the planned establishment of a missile defense system by the United States in his country should be discussed within the NATO framework.
During his talks with visiting NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Sikorski said the issue should not only be negotiated between Poland and the United States, but also within the NATO framework.
Sikorski said the anti-missile system is important for the whole NATO security, and Poland hopes it would protect all NATO countries.
De Hoop Scheffer said the issue would be discussed at the upcoming NATO summit scheduled in April in Bucharest.
The United States is planning to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic as part of its European missile shield.
Russia has voiced objection to the plan, saying it will threaten Russia's national security, and has warned that Moscow will aim its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic.
