European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana sent a message of condolences Monday to Albanian President Bamir Topi following explosions at a munitions depot.

"I was shocked and saddened by the tragic accident at the munitions depot near Gerdec, in which many people lost their lives," Solana said in the message posted on the EU Council's website.

He conveyed his "most sincere and heartfelt condolences" to Topi, to the government of Albania and to the families of the victims.

A massive explosion on Saturday at an Albanian army ammunition dump near the Albanian capital killed at least 11 people and injured nearly 300.

The initial blast at the depot in Gerdec, a village to the north of Tirana, triggered a series of explosions.
