Slovakia adheres to the one-China policy and is opposed to the holding of a "UN membership referendum" in Taiwan, the Slovakian Foreign Ministry told Xinhua Tuesday.

To hold a "UN membership referendum" alongside elections in Taiwan would no doubt hinder the easing of tension across the Taiwan Straits, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jan Skoda said.

Skoda said he hopes peace and stability can be maintained in the region.

Taiwan's election authorities announced last month that a plebiscite on whether the island should seek UN membership under the name "Taiwan" will be held simultaneously with the March 22 Taiwan leadership poll.
