A Romanian soldier dispatched to Afghanistan was killed and another was injured on Thursday, Romania's Defense Ministry announced.
Private Ionut Cosmin Sandu was killed and Corporal Silviu Atanasiu sustained leg injuries when their Humvee vehicle ran over a makeshift explosive device.
The troops were on a patrolling mission in Zabul province, the ministry added.
Security measures were taken in the area immediately after the blast, in line with the standard operation procedures in such situations and the wounded soldier was urgently taken to the hospital at Langman base, where he is given specialized medical care.
Private Sandu, 29, was married, with two children. Corporal Atanasiu is 26 and he is not married. They both were on their second mission in Afghanistan.
Romania has about 1,600 soldiers deployed abroad, more than half of them are in Afghanistan, and the rest in Iraq and Kosovo.
