A contingent of 162 Portuguese soldiers left for Kosovo Thursday to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) rapid reaction force deployed in the region.

The soldiers will stay in Kosovo for six months.

Portugal has not officially recognized the independence of Kosovo, in order to avoid possible attacks on Portuguese troops by the local Serbian community.

Commander of the Portuguese force Carlos Jeronimo said Portuguese soldiers are "ready for the worse missions," referring to the possible conflicts between Kosovo and Serbia.
