Latvian President Valdis Zatlers will attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, his adviser on foreign affairs said Monday.

Zatlers will also go to the sports ground to cheer for Latvian athletes, Andris Pelss said.

He expressed his belief that the Chinese government can properly handle the recent riots in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, saying the international community should not boycott the grand sports event over the issue.

Earlier, a government spokesman said Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis will also leave for Beijing during the Olympic Games if time permits.
