U.S experts are due to arrive in Poland soon for talks on modernization of the Polish army, Deputy Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said on Tuesday.
"We have some U.S. commitments to begin talks about modernization of the Polish armed forces, we are waiting now for U.S. expert teams to arrive in Poland shortly and start the talks," Polish news agency PAP quoted Waszczykowski as saying.
"We may then return to talks on deploying and functioning of the anti-missile shield in Poland," he added.
Poland has time until summer to sign the missile-defense deal with the United States in connection with the nearing end of George W. Bush's term in office, Waszczykowski said.
But he expected that the plan to place the anti-missile shield in Poland would be continued by the new U.S. government.
The United States is planning to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic as part of its European missile shield. Russia has objected the plan, saying it will threat Russian national security.
Warsaw wants Washington to boost significantly its military assistance in return for allowing interceptor missiles to be based on Polish territory.
Poland and the United States agreed in February that talks on basing the elements of the anti-missile shield in Poland will be conducted simultaneously with talks on U.S. assistance in modernizing the Polish army.
