Advisors to the leaders of Cyprus' two communities have started their preparatory talks this week, with both sides reporting on Tuesday positive progress.

The two advisors have been assigned to set up working groups and technical committees to prepare for fully-fledged reunification talks, which are expected to restart in three months.

The arrangement was made at a March 21 meeting between Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias, the newly elected President of Cyprus, and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in the UN monitored buffer zone in Nicosia.

The two leaders agreed during the meeting to revive the long-stalled talks for the reunification of the east Mediterranean island divided since 1974.

Hasan Ercakica, the spokesman for Turkish Cypriot leadership, told local media that the outcome of the advisors' meeting which started on Monday were positive.

"There is progress," he said, referring to the framework of the working groups and technical committees.

George Iacovou, advisor to Greek Cypriot leader Christofias, revealed on Tuesday that the two sides have agreed to set up 12-14committees to tackle various issues concerning the two communities on their road to reunification.

"The committees are basically agreed," he said.

"We had to choose whether we should continue to discuss (on Wednesday) the content of the agenda of every committee or to proceed with negotiation," he added.
