Bulgarian customs officers at the Malko Tarnovo border checkpoint with Turkey seized 38 kg of heroin Wednesday, the local Sofia News Agency reported Thursday.

During a routine check, officials found 40 packages of the drug hidden in a secret compartment in a bus headed to Romania.

According to official preliminary estimates, the seized heroin is worth more than 4 million euros (2.5 million U.S. dollars).

The Turkish driver of the bus was arrested and an investigation is underway.

Bulgaria is on a key transit route for the smuggling of drugs from Asia and the Middle East to western Europe.

In the last eight years, Bulgarian Customs has confiscated over 19.2 tons of drugs.
