The Swedish government announced here on Thursday that it will reform comprehensively its immigration policy for Swedish enterprises to employ foreigners in an easier way.

Persons outside the European Union (EU) must be granted automatic work and resident permits in the future if they have a concrete job offer from Swedish employers, the Swedish government said in a statement.

In the past, the Swedish Employment Bureau would have intervened to try and fill the position with a Swedish resident.

Work and residence permits will be renewable after two years and in addition, no one who is in employment may be forced back to their home country, according to the new rules which will come into force from Dec. 15, 2008.

This is the biggest reform of Swedish immigration policy for several decades and it can contribute to a richer and more open society in Sweden, Migration Minister Tobias Billstrom said in an article published by the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.
