Romania hopes a new strategy will be "shaped" on Afghanistan at upcoming NATO Summit here, which will be not limited to dispatch of new troops in that country, President Traian Basescu said on Thursday.
"We hope that the NATO Summit will envisage a new strategy on Afghanistan, with this country not to be perceived as only a battlefield anymore," Basescu said.
According to him, such strategy should avoid focusing exclusively on the NATO countries dispatching new troops on the Afghan territory, it should rather come with solutions for this country.
Basescu also said Romania intends to fulfill its obligations in Afghanistan, Romania has already sent more troops there, their number increased from 500 to 780, moreover Romania gave its approval to have its troops removed to the southern area of Afghanistan, where fights against Talibans are the toughest, the Romanian president added.
The International Security Assistance Force of NATO considers that there is need of 10,000 additional troops in Afghanistan, to help the 47,000 already there to fight Taliban insurgents.
The NATO Summit is to take place in Bucharest on April 2-4, with the enlargement, operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo as its main topics. Source:Xinhua
