Czech opponents of a U.S. missile shield to be built in the Czech Republic and Poland on Friday expressed solidarity with protests planned in Poland at the weekend.

Members of a No to Bases group handed over a letter to the Polish Embassy, saying they support the protests planned for Saturday in the northern Polish city of Slupsk.

The U.S. interceptor missiles are to be stationed at the former Soviet base in the city Saturday, ahead of the April 2-4 NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania, to discuss the U.S. anti-missile defence project.

"We are aware that a crushing majority of people in Poland is opposed to the bases just as in the Czech Republic," said the group's spokesman Jan Majicek.

In the letter, the No to Bases group said the construction of the base will increase international tension and contribute to a renewed arms race.

It constitutes a continuation of the U.S.' aggressive foreign policy, the letter added.

The United States wants to build a radar base in the Brdy military district, some 90 km southwest of Prague, and a silo for 10 interceptor missiles in Poland as part of the missile defense shield.

The Czech government began negotiations on the base with the U.S. early last year, despite sharp criticism from Russia and opposition from two thirds of the Czech population.
