A Russian helicopter crashed in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic on Sunday, at least killing three of the nine people on board, according to reports reaching here from Oslo.
The Mi8 helicopter was owned and operated by Russian mining company Trust Arcticugol in Barentsburg, a Russian municipality of about 500 people. It crashed while landing near Barentsburg during bad weather but that the exact cause of the accident was unknown, the Norwegian News Agency NTB reported.
"Three of the passengers are confirmed dead and two others are seriously injured," NTB quoted Svalbard's governor Per Sefland as saying.
The Svalbard islands are about 500 kilometers north of the Norwegian mainland. Under the Versailles Treaty of 1920, Norway was granted sovereignty of Svalbard but other co-signatories were permitted to establish settlements there.
